What began with a desire for a simple yet high-spec pool house quickly evolved into a comprehensive property makeover. Situated near the top amidst the challenging contours of one of Auckland's historic volcanoes in Mt Albert, Auckland, Summit Drive would demand meticulous planning, innovation and a deep understanding of the client's vision.

Aware of the challenges posed by the site's unique characteristics, including its tricky terrain and restricted access, the client understood the need for a seasoned partner to manage the complexities of the construction process. With busy schedules and competing priorities, they entrusted Taylor Building with the responsibility of overseeing every aspect of the project, confident in their ability to navigate the terrain and deliver results.

Taylor Building navigated these hurdles by leaning on experience overcoming compliance issues seamlessly and collaborating closely with draughtsmen, engineers, and designers, ensuring that every aspect of the project aligned with the client's expectations.

Inspired by the idyllic landscapes of New Zealand's renowned holiday destinations, such as Kauri Cliffs, the pool house emerged as a harmonious extension of the existing property, blending seamlessly into its surroundings. The crux of the architectural design was ensuring that the points of reference and details of the pool house were seamlessly aligned with the main house.

Central to the overall philosophy was a celebration of family, with the client's vision centred around creating a space that fostered connection for every generation within the household. From expansive views of the Waitakere ranges to intimate glimpses back towards the main house, every vantage point was carefully considered to maximise functional space, but also evoke a sense of belonging and serenity.

Positioned to capture the gentle rays of the morning sun as it floods the interior with warmth and light, the pool house faces northwest, offering a tranquil retreat bathed in natural luminance. As dusk descends, sunlight  filters through the western horizon, casting a warm glow over the landscape and providing the perfect backdrop for evening gatherings and relaxation.

A rarity in design, the entire outdoor living space now offered the unique opportunity to appreciate the property from a new perspective, inviting its occupants to enjoy it from every angle.

Intricately woven into the fabric of the design were elements of practicality and durability, exemplified by the pool fence, fire pit, and pool house, all meticulously crafted with materials such steel and concrete for structural integrity and longevity. Eschewing traditional glass barriers, the client opted for a curved Corten steel fence, inspired by Australian rustic yet modern design, adding a touch of modernity and sophistication to the outdoor space that would age well with time like the northland schist paving.

The success of the project rested on a foundation of education and trust. Taylor Building fostered a relationship with the client built on transparent communication and expert advice, ensuring that every decision was informed and every detail meticulously executed. By prioritising uniqueness and attention to detail, Taylor Building delivered a pool house and outdoor living area that not only met but exceeded the client's expectations.
